Laci Gergely

6+ years at Melkweg

Chief Technology & Operating Officer

An industry veteran started working in IT in 1998.

Please give us a quick professional introduction! What do you do here, what did you bring you here?

I have been the CTO & COO at MelkwegDigital since 2019. A year before that, I was already in engagement with the company as an external consultant to audit the engineering processes. But I have known Zoli (the founder of Melkweg) since 2008 thanks to our former common employer, the local leader interactive agency, Kirowski, we worked on some projects together there.

How did you get into the industry? What is your professional track record so far?

I graduated as an architect but during those times I was also getting engaged in IT projects with my friends. This brought me to get hired by Magyar Telekom (the local Deutsche Telekom branch) as IT engineer then turned to project leader, later I got promoted to the head of the database department. In 2005, I joined Virgo Systems as CEO, a growing software development studio –– during these times, Virgo became a well-known local player because of their successful social media platform, iWiW. Then Kirowski (later: Dentsu Isobar Budapest) hired me, I worked there between 2008 - ‘16 serving the CTO role, where I dove deep, beyond the software development, in a larger spectrum of the digital landscape within creative development, online marketing & media.

What is your superpower?

Big picture understanding. Calmness in the most critical projects. I think I know my black & grey spaces of my knowledge.

What were your favourite projects so far?

I love the agency world because we always work on very diverse projects giving a holistic, polymath overview in terms of industries & types of digital platforms (from web via mobile apps to SaaS). It’s like being able to take a look into the backstage of different music bands. Just highlighting a few ones from the Melkweg portfolio: we built the the whole, customer-facing digital footprint of Alma Pharmacy (our country’s leading pharmacy franchise network) from web via mobile app & e-commerce to the digital loyalty program; FilmMoon is community listing site for connecting indie filmmakers & 30+k film festivals; or Carehomenet, a startup which aimed to build a global database of elderly home services.

What do you do if you are not working?

I have been a big fan of sports from my early childhood, doing work-outs two or three times a week (squash, football, running, skiing).  I read a lot, mainly classical literature, like now Umberto Eco & Steven Saylor novels. I love pub quizzes, music festivals, concerts. I also play on a few instruments, piano, guitar, ukulele, jew's-harp…

What is your favourite digital stuff?

I don't have one or two favourites, I like to observe new emerging trends and try out new technologies, but only when they are stable. Technology is developing at such a speed that it is impossible to try every new thing. Once you get to know one, three new and better ones will take its place.
