I am the founder, and the design & creative director of our company. When I founded Melkweg, I envisioned a nimble, future-proof collective that would design interfaces in the space age of humankind decades or even centuries later. Hence I picked up Milky Way for our name, but because the English name sounds somewhat lame to me, partially because of the same chocolate brand, I have chosen the word's Dutch translation.
Drawing was “the thing” during my childhood, I was deeply engaged in visual arts & experiences. I also put together my first website while still in high school. My developing skills paved the way forward so far. I planned to be an internal designer originally, but I was not accepted to nr. 1 local design university for these subjects, so finally I studied communication & foreign languages. A friend of mine (later a client of Melkweg) told me once that “Zoli drew all the time during our lectures, the only problem was that our university program was not a design or art school.” Probably it’s not surprising that I did not finish my degree program instead I kicked off my designer career. My first designer job was at the leading country-wide TV2, then joined the global online media company, Docler Holding. Between 2006 - 2010, I worked for the local leader interactive advertising agency, Kirowski (which was acquired by Isobar / Dentsu somewhat later). It was a very fruitful period of my life, I learnt a lot from superb colleagues (anyway, a few of them worked / are working for Melkweg), mostly designed microsites, campaign banners, Flash stuffs back then. At some point, I got fed up that most of my digital advertising works had a very short life because most online campaigns are not running for years, so I turned my interest to more long-lasting, impactful digital productions. After a shorter entrepreneurial milestone, I started to kick off Melkweg at the end of 2014. Fun fact: the legal entity was registered exactly on 1st of May, 2015, on the international labour day.
I have been there, done that, have seen (almost) everything. ;) My motto could be a quote from Walt Disney: “it's kind of fun to do the impossible”.
I love all the delivered projects of Melkweg, really. But if I need to pick up one or two: (1) We built a fake mobile app for a French experiential theatre. They function as a real laboratory, in which the line between fiction and reality is often blurred. The team plays street scenes for a deliberately small audience: the audience can only decide at the end of the performance where art ended and reality began. Our task was to create a fake stage call center mobile application. With the app, viewers and actors had access to a simulated message recording interface, where the two parties could interact with each other. The application also helped the actors with an additional function: it signaled when one of the actors appeared on stage.
(2) The other fav project of mine is Katana, which was an innovative viewer and strategy application designed for players of one of the most popular e-sports, CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive), which provided useful help for both professionals and amateurs. Users can create and share new strategies, view, practice with their friends and even earn money in the app. Our task was to create a completely new desktop and mobile experience, which allows amateur and professional Katana users to collaborate more easily and efficiently with their teammates. The tools in the app make it easy to both plan and implement strategies, so players can improve their performance and get the most out of themselves.
I like online games so much, my most loved ones are not operating today, e.g. the Swedish Armed Forces Team Test (Youtube link), the Drowning Simulator (2014 Gameplay) or the best board game ever called Glass (a link to a gameplay).
I am always working, just kidding... :) When I’m not, I love to play pool, cook great meals, travel to beautiful places, draw, watch movies, and have fun with friends. Pretty usual stuff.
Design in general is an essential part of my life. Especially thinking of the future of digital experiences inspires me a lot. And AR/VR is definitely one of those. As an entrepreneur, I am also very interested in business management subjects, how to create successful companies with great people together.
